CQ Field Day! June 24

CQ is the Radio Amateur (ham) shortcut meaning calling anyone out there. We’re calling CQ to anyone interested in Amateur Radio and its capabilities to serve the public interest in the event of an emergency, especially when commercial and public service communications are degraded or non-existent.

The Pilot Knob Amateur Radio Club will be participating in ARRL’s Field Day, an emergency communications preparedness exercise. The club will set up in austere field conditions at Leavenworth City’s VA Park on Home Place, just north of Eisenhower VA Medical Center and across from the Leavenworth City Dog Park. Our operating hours are from 1 pm Saturday, June 24 and we continuously operate 24 hours until Sunday afternoon, June 25, 2023.

The public is welcome to tour our site and those who have an interest in Amateur Radio can interact with operators with a full range of experience; from newly licensed to “old timers”.

Since individual hams and clubs will be doing the same thing all of over the USA at the same time, the object of the exercise is to contact as many other Field Day participants as possible by Morse Code, voice, and digital data over the air. You’ll see a variety of radios and antennas that operate from very low frequencies all the way through microwave.

In addition to highlighting our emergency communications capabilities, it is more like a contest, social event, learning lab, and camp out, all rolled together.

See you there?
